Chief Justice Meets Lawyers from IATL
The Hon. Chief Justice with the visiting fellows from International Academy of Trial Lawyers (IATL) at the High Court in Kampala
The Hon.Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Bart M. Katureebe, on October 19, 2017, met with officials from the International Academy of Trial Lawyers (IATL) based inthe US at the High Court in Kampala.
Th eChief Justice briefed the visiting team on the on-going reforms in the Judiciary aimed at enhancing access to justice in the courts.
The visit was to enable the lawyers understand the Ugandan Legal and Judicial system so as to determine how they might contribute to the country's efforts towards implementing Legal and Judicial reforms. The IATL Fellows work in collaboration with the International Law Institute-African Centre for Legal Excellence.
The Chief Justice briefed the Fellows on the on-going reforms in the Judiciary particularly computerization of court processes, reforms in the court registries and records management, improved use of alternative dispute resolution, among others.
He also briefed the Fellows on his recent tour of the US in furtherance of the existing partnership with the International Justice Mission amongst other organizations.
The Fellows informed the Chief Justice that they were interested in partnering with the Judiciary and JLOS in supporting innovations and implementation of legal and judicial reforms.
They have held a number of meetings with other Law and Justice actors and have visited some courts and attended court sessions. They have had a glimpse of what's on-going in the legal and judicial sector.
IATL's purpose is to promote reforms in the law, facilitate the administration of Justice, promote the rule of law internationally, elevating the standards of integrity, honor and courtesy in the legal profession.
